Breaking the Barriers
In 2002, TASH organized a one-day meeting of people with autism and leaders in the disability rights movement in Boston, Mass., to explore the barriers that have stood in the way of people with autism and communication differences. The meeting was well attended and included people with autism (most of whom used facilitated communication as their preferred communication method), family members, facilitators, disability rights leaders, representatives of a wide range of disability organizations and disability advocates. This meeting was called to gain participation in local and statewide advocacy efforts as well as national advocacy opportunities. Out of this meeting, which was funded by a grant from the NLM Family Foundation, the Breaking the Barriers initiative was born.
