TASH Signs on to Letter to Maryland State Board of Education
TASH has signed on to a letter to the Maryland State Board of Education regarding proposed regulations on student discipline, which require greater data collection, promote reductions in disparities for students of color, and require that suspended students receive homework while on suspension, among other changes.

TASH Responds to AASA Position Supporting Restraint and Seclusion in Schools
Last week, the American Association of School Administrators issued an unsubstantiated, ill-informed and reckless report in which it voiced support for restraint and seclusion use on children in our schools. This report gained much attention through e-mail circulation and national news reports. TASH has responded in order to bring clarity and truth to the conversation.

Teachers caught on tape bullying student with disability (video)
The following is a disturbing account of abuse from an Ohio school. As reported on the Today Show on NBC, Cheyanne, a 14-year-old student with a disability, told her father she was being bullied at school. Her father was shocked to learn it was Cheyanne’s teachers doing the bullying. After notifying school administrators and being turned away, Cheyanne was outfitted with a hidden tape recorder in class. Over a four-day period the abusive remarks made by two middle school teachers were recorded. The contents of those tapes are alarming.

Disability Policy the Subject of a Virtual Town Hall with the White House
On Thursday, July 14, the White House sponsored a virtual town hall meeting on the issue of disability policy in the Obama administration. The town hall featured top White House disability policy staff, including Kareem Dale, Jeff Crowley, and Rebecca Cokley, who answered questions posed from online submissions. The meeting was called to address the questions and concerns of those with disabilities and others in the community.

Arne Duncan to Deliver Commencement for D.C. Students with Disabilities Who Completed Job Skills Program
In an e-mail from the White House today, it was announced that U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan will deliver the commencement address at a graduation ceremony here in Washington, D.C. The ceremony is being held for 25 D.C. high school students who have participated in Project Search, a program that aims to connect students with disabilities with real world skills through local employment in federal agencies, including the Departments of Education, Labor and Health and Human Services.
