The KU Transition to Postsecondary Education for Youth with Intellectual Disabilities (KU-TPE) is an inclusive postsecondary education program at the University of Kansas that provides young adults with intellectual disabilities a credentialed college program in which the students participate in all typical campus academic and student life activities. In addition, KU-TPE students participate in high quality and fully inclusive work-based learning experiences aligned with their career interests.
The Academic Advisor Senior, as part of the project team, coordinates academic advising and services for up to 20 KU- TPE students. This includes using a person-centered approach to providing high impact student advising, developing individualized coursework adaptations, coordinating with other KU units regarding academics, accommodations and instruction, and guiding other staff members to make and implement coursework adaptations. The Academic Advisor Senior will supervise student hourlies and be the lead staff member responsible for developing and implementing academic support systems in collaboration with other staff and the principle investigator. This position includes elements of systems change as well as individualized supports and advocacy in order to develop a program that can be sustained beyond federal funding. Some travel may be required.
- 25% – Provide overall day-to-day coordination of program activities focusing on academic advising, accommodations and adaptations to ensure timely
- Act as KU-TPE team lead on all activities related to
- Ensure initiatives related to academic supports and services are integrated with other elements of KU-TPE.
- Collaborate across KU units regarding academic services and supports impacting KU-TPE.
- 25% – Provide high impact academic advising to students in the KU-TPE program.
- Meet with students weekly to discuss coursework, accommodations and
- Identify individualized strategies for access and progress in courses/program.
- Support students to make informed decisions about academic
- Support students’ person-centered plans and career
- 25% – Implement process of identifying, developing and implementing individualized adaptations for KU-TPE students within a universal design for learning framework.
- Meet with instructor, student and others to identify adaptations for essential course assignments.
- Make coursework/assignment adaptations and teach/support other staff to do so as
- Analyze effectiveness of adaptations, make necessary adjustments, and document
- 10% – Organize, coordinate and oversee tutoring opportunities each semester.
- Coordinate with other KU units regarding tutoring
- Oversee specialized tutoring for KU-TPE program, as
- Collaborate with other KU units to develop new tutoring
- 5% – Supervise student hourlies to fulfill their job duties related to academic supports.
- 5% – Gather, synthesize and apply information, policies, regulations and procedures related to KU-TPE students and program academic

- Bachelor’s degree with minimum of three (3) years of making high quality academic adaptations in inclusive settings, OR Master’s degree with minimum of one (1) year making high quality academic adaptations in inclusive
- Minimum of one (1) year experience working with young adults with intellectual
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and administrative
- Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application
- Experience working independently and with collaborative
- Strong computer skills especially with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as with online technologies including those used for academic modifications and
- Master’s Degree in special education or related
- Previous experience working with an inclusive secondary or postsecondary education program for young adults with intellectual
- Creative problem-solving experience using a variety of
- Knowledge and experience of postsecondary academic and student
- Excellent verbal communication skills as demonstrated by the interview and
