PennTASH welcome members of PennTASH, Pennsylvania residents and others from the surrounding areas to attend a free event April 13, 2011, to remember the tragedy and lessons learned from the infamous Pennhurst institution.
The event retells the segregation of citizens with disabilities at Pennhurst, which became well-known and widely criticized for its mistreatment of people with disabilities. (Pennhurst closed in 1987.) Come and hear a uniquely Pennsylvanian story of “Jim Crow” treatment of yet another group of people seen as “different.” PennTASH president and former Pennhurst class member, Jean Searle, will share her story, including what it took to leave the institution to join “the rest of us.” Jim Conroy, a medical sociologist who was the principal investigator and designer of the famous Pennhurst Longitudinal Study, will also speak.
A briefing reception starts at 6 p.m. followed by the program at 6:30 p.m.
