Department Summary

The department offers programs designed to meet the needs of undergraduate students who are interested in obtaining Massachusetts initial licensure as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (Pre K-8 grade) or (5-12 grade) or as a Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities (all levels). This also includes a five-year Dual Licensure program leading to initial licensure in both elementary education and special education and a masters degree (M.Ed.) in Special Education. The department also offers two minors designed to meet the interests of undergraduate students who have an interest in students with special needs.

The department offers programs designed to meet the needs of graduate students who are interested in obtaining Massachusetts initial licensure as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (Pre K-8 grade) or (5-12 grade) or as a Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities (all levels). The program also offers master degrees in special education and programs to meet Massachusetts professional licensure. Additionally, coursework in special education may be used to meet professional development goals, or endorsement standards for Transition Specialists or Autism Specialists.

The Special Education Licensure Program at Bridgewater State University meets all Massachusetts Department of Education licensure requirements, and standards established by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

Essential Duties

The Department of Special Education is seeking applicants for the tenure track position of Assistant Professor in Special Education. Successful candidates will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in special education, both licensure and non-licensure, supervise student practicum, and advise undergraduate and graduate students.

Applicants should be strongly committed to excellence in teaching and advising, and to working in a multicultural environment that fosters diversity. They should also have an ability to use technology effectively in teaching and learning, the ability to work collaboratively, evidence of scholarly activity, and a commitment to public higher education.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Advising students working toward the Massachusetts special education licensure endorsement for teachers of students with moderate and severe disabilities, as well as academic program planning and professional development; designing, teaching and assessing courses to ensure the best possible learning outcomes for teacher candidates and their students; engaging in scholarly activities related to the field of special education; collaborating with department and college colleagues to ensure program quality, and to maintain state and national accreditation; participating in ongoing and regularly-scheduled department, college, and university committees, faculty meetings, and retreats to ensure Bridgewater State programs meet all professional standards and program quality expectations; working with students to promote undergraduate/graduate research and service learning; working with diverse populations.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in Special Education or related field from an accredited institution. ABD candidates will be considered.
  • Evidence of a minimum of 3 years successful P-12 teaching experience with students with disabilities
  • Evidence of successful college/university teaching experience including teaching in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence of conceptual, methodological, and applied knowledge and skills in one or more of the following areas of expertise:

  • Content subject knowledge in STEM areas
  • Autism/BCBA/SEL expertise
