Closing the Low-Expectations Loophole for Students with Disabilities

We at TASH talk about EQUITY frequently. Often we mean equity of access; to services, to supports, to opportunities, etc. But we also mean equity of accountability; holding school districts, states, and agencies responsible equally for the outcomes of the individuals they support. The Department of Education has recently indicated its intent to remove the regulation that has allowed states and school districts to decide which students are included in their state accountability measures (state standardized tests). At TASH, we feel strongly that this decision is a huge step toward achieving equity in our education system. When we hold states accountable for the educational outcomes of ALL children we move in the direction of equity.
