Judge Overturns Guilt Verdict in Rape of Woman with Down Syndrome

A Georgia Court of Appeals judge recently ordered a new trial for a man convicted of repeatedly raping a 24-year-old woman with Down syndrome. Judge Christopher McFadden overturned the jury’s guilty verdicts against William Jeffrey Dumas, who was originally sentenced to 25 years in prison. McFadden, who oversaw both cases, said he would not comment further on his decision for a new trial. However, in his ruling, he said the woman did not behave like a victim, nor did the alleged perpetrator behave like someone who had committed a series of violent crimes. TASH is joining NDSC in asking for your support in writing to the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission to ask that McFadden’s qualifications, conduct and fitness to serve come under review.
