More Autism Schools Proposed in New Jersey

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is in favor of creating additional public schools for educating children with autism in the state, a clear departure from the practice of integrating students with disabilities into neighborhood schools. Many organizations and parent advocates have spoken out about the proposal, pointing to the value of academic and social skills gained by classroom participation alongside other peers. Currently, more than three-quarters of New Jersey’s 21 counties have separate special-education schools, including several that specifically serve children with autism.
