Message from the Executive Director

A portrait of Michael Brogioli. He has high silver hair parted to one side. He is wearing an open collared shirt and a black blazer. The background is a blue speckled photographer's backdrop.TASH looks forward to 2023 as we work on a number of initiatives to advance our mission, including participation in #TASHCares Vaccine Outreach Project to raise awareness about COVID, flu and MPX vaccines.

TASH is also pleased to partner with SABE (Self Advocates Becoming Empowered) on a policy advocacy initiative that will include a web-based action center portal and new resources to track legislation and further inform and engage self-advocates in the policy process.

TASH has joined a number of national disability advocacy organizations to produce a Policy Agenda for the new, 118th Congress; this document will be released next month. Furthermore, TASH plans to participate in the annual Disability Policy Seminar that we anticipate will take place later this year in Washington, DC (details to come).

We look forward to updating all of you in the weeks and months ahead as we work together to advance equity, opportunity and inclusion for all people with disabilities.

With best wishes for a productive, healthy, and happy New Year,

Michael Brogioli

We will be making appointments to record stories at the 2023 Cal-TASH Conference, March 3 & 4, 2023 in Los Angeles. If you will be there and would like to share your story, e-mail us at info@caltash.org.

#TASHCares Vaccination Outreach Project

#TASHCares is part of a project to raise awareness about the health benefits of COVID-19 vaccines, including the latest boosters, as well as flu and MPX vaccines for people with disabilities (self-advocates), family caregivers, and direct support providers. Visit the project webpage for more information.

Vaccines are effective against new variants

The graph below illustrates that people who have received the bivalent booster have 13 times lower risk of dying from COVID-19 than unvaccinated people and 2 times lower risk than people who have received the primary series of vaccinations, but not the bivalent booster. CommuniTEA Conversations

An illustration of a tea cup

Our TASH Diversity and Social Impact community of practice is hosting open conversations around some “hot topics”. We’ve been discussing that our ideals and best practices don’t always translate to what is happening in the real lives of families and people with disabilities. This is a time for talking and sharing stories which reflect and respect multiple points of view including differences in cultures, disabilities, diversity of opportunity and circumstances so that we can find common ground and learn from each other.

We met online in August and October and at the conference in Phoenix. Wide ranging and robust conversations have happened around a variety of topics including the importance of building trust with people from different backgrounds, making sure we include the LGBTQ community and people who use different ways to communicate, being better listeners and mindfulness, risk concerns in different cultures, future planning and transition, pushing boundaries, the need for grace, possible future topics and speakers etc.

We invite you to join us for our next TEA on February 17 at 1:00 PM Eastern. You can sign-up here.
