The Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS) in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure stream appointment in Special Education at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, with an emphasis on autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Special Education or a closely related area and background and experience in both ASD and positive behaviour support; Attainment of or eligibility for the Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) credential is also essential, along with evidence of research and scholarly achievement, leadership ability, interdisciplinary and community collaboration, and experience and commitment to excellence in teaching and research supervision. Preference will be given to individuals with research, teaching, and supervisory experience in positive behaviour support, early intervention, augmentative and alternative communication, and/or inclusive education. In addition to contributing to both graduate and undergraduate teaching and service within the department, the successful applicant is expected to have a strong commitment to research and training in Special Education and to pursue an active program of research, seek research funding, and provide academic and research supervision of masters and doctoral students. The annual workload for an Assistant/Associate Professor is 12 credits. The appointment is expected to start July 1, 2018, or as soon as the position is filled.

ECPS is the largest among all five academic units in the Faculty of Education. There are five program areas in the Department, including Counseling Psychology; Human Development, Learning and Culture; School Psychology; Special Education; and Measurement, Evaluation and Research Methodology. Over 400 graduate students, including 95 PhD students, are enrolled in the Department. The Department has strong ties to schools and to community and governmental agencies. Both the Department and the Special Education program have outstanding records of student and faculty research funding.
The Special Education program is focused on the education of students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and blind or visually impaired, as well as those with developmental disabilities, emotional or behavioural disorders, and learning disabilities. UBC is one of the only three post-secondary institutions in Canada that offer graduate coursework approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Faculty are committed to promoting practices that facilitate inclusion, empowerment, and self-determination of individuals with disabilities and other special needs in home, school, and community settings. All Special Education programs integrate developmental, social-ecological, and behavioral perspectives, with a focus on the ability to utilize multiple frameworks to understand the development of individuals and groups within complex systems in a diverse society.
This is a tenure-stream position in the Professoriate Stream. The successful candidate will be reviewed for appointment (if at Associate Professor level), reappointment, tenure, and promotion in accordance with the Collective Agreement. The position is subject to final budgetary approval. Starting salary is determined both by the candidate’s qualifications and experience and by the career progress scale within the Faculty.
